Support First-Generation College Students
🎯 Background & Need
The Tamil Nadu Domestic Workers Welfare Trust (TNDWWT) has identified an urgent need for financial support among first-generation college-goers, especially children of domestic workers in Chennai, Perumbakkam, Chemmanchery, Kannagi Nagar, and Padappai.
🔹 89.19% of surveyed students are first-generation learners.
🔹 62.61% female and 37.84% male students seek financial aid.
🔹 Most families earn less than ₹1,00,000 annually, making higher education nearly impossible without external support.
Domestic workers often survive on low wages, borrow from moneylenders at high interest, and remain trapped in lifelong debt. Their children, despite strong aspirations, face dropping out due to lack of funds.
💡 The Challenge
Without financial help, these students risk:
- Abandoning their college education.
- Falling back into low-paying, insecure jobs like their parents.
- Continuing the cycle of poverty and debt.
🙌 How Funds Will Help
Your support will:
✔ Provide scholarships to cover tuition, materials, and basic needs.
✔ Reduce the debt burden on families.
✔ Offer mentorship, skill training, and career guidance for students.
✔ Empower at least 100 first-generation college-goers to complete undergraduate degrees.
These students will gain confidence, employability, and leadership skills—lifting their families and inspiring their communities.
🌍 The Impact
- Students stay in college and graduate successfully.
- Families escape debt cycles caused by education loans.
- Communities gain role models, creating a ripple effect of empowerment.
- A path to long-term social mobility and equity for marginalized groups.
