The Osai Trust has launched the “Plant a Palm Tree” Initiative to restore the natural balance of our environment and safeguard Tamil Nadu’s rural and urban ecosystems.
The Palmyra palm (Borassus flabellifer), once known as the “Tree of Life,” is deeply rooted in Tamil heritage and ecology. It plays a vital role in preventing soil erosion, storing groundwater, and supporting biodiversity.
However, over the past few decades, the number of palm trees has drastically declined due to urban expansion, deforestation, and neglect. The loss of these trees has led to:
🔹 Increased soil erosion and groundwater depletion.
🔹 Loss of traditional livelihoods connected to palm-based crafts and products.
🔹 Decline in biodiversity and reduced resilience against climate change.
Reviving palm trees is not just about planting trees — it’s about reviving culture, ecology, and sustainability.
